Much like George Clinton, one of his biggest influences, Musiq shows of his unique artistic personality with this unusual form of writing.

Growing up as the eldest of nine children allowed Musiq to do things his own way. At the age of seventeen Musiq realized that school was not the key to his success and he ventured out to find his true calling in life. The years to come were very difficult for Musiq. The only thing that brought him comfort was to create music that expressed what he was going through. Little did he know that this newfound comfort would not only be the key to his success, but would also be a source of comfort for others in their times of distress.

Soon after hitting the Philly music scene, Taalib Johnson became so enthusiastic about his music that he decided to take on the name Musiq. Musiq then completed his name by adding Soulchild, which embodies the legacy and traditions of past soul stars. Therefore, the name Musiq Soulchild is representative of the music and influences that have shaped Musiq Soulchild’s life and career.

Musiq was introduced to the world in 2000 with his platinum debut album, Aijuswanaseing (I Just Want to Sing), which included the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop single, “Just Friends”. Musiq’s second single, “Love”, spent 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and has been described by many as a classic. Musiq’s 2002 album, Juslisen (Just Listen), debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Charts and quickly went platinum with hit singles, such as “Halfcrazy” and “Dontchange”. By the drop of his third album, Soulstar, in 2003, Musiq had established himself as one of the top R&B/Soul artists of his time. Soulstar included the hot singles “Forthenight” and “Whoknows”.

After a four year break and a change in record labels, Musiq knew that, in order for his success to continue, his sound would have to reflect his personal growth and journey. In 2007 Luvanmusiq (Love and Music) was released and included the hit singles “B.U.D.D.Y.”, “Teach Me”, and “Make you Happy”. In late 2008, Musiq’s fifth album, Onmyradio, hit the scene and made is mark with such hits as “Sobeautiful” and “Ifuleave (ft. Mary J. Blige)”.

In addition to being a platinum selling artist, Musiq has garnered TV and print ads from McDonald’s, GAP, Coca Cola, Levi Strauss, and Nike. His ambition and down to earth attitude have been the keys to his success. All of this talent, hard work, and determination have allowed Musiq to flourish into one of the few R&B soulful artists that still exist.
